Historic Laparoscopic Prostatectomy Performed at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur

06 Dec 2025, Kanpur : The Department of Urology, GSVM Medical College (PMSSY Super Speciality Wing), Kanpur has successfully performed a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy on a 74-year-old male patient from Fatehpur suffering from carcinoma prostate.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Anil J. Baid, Urologist & Assistant Professor, assisted by Dr. Mayank Gupta, under the guidance and supervision of Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Kala, Principal, GSVM Medical College.

This surgery is believed to be the first laparoscopic radical prostatectomy performed in a state government medical college in Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant milestone in the field of urological cancer care in the region.

Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Kala, Principal, GSVM Medical College, congratulated the team and stated that this achievement reflects the growing capability of government medical colleges in providing advanced, minimally invasive cancer surgery to patients who might otherwise not be able to afford such treatment in the private sector.

Special acknowledgement is also due to Dr. Manish Kumar, Nodal Officer, PMSSY Super Speciality Wing, who, along with the Principal Sir, has been instrumental in providing infrastructure, equipment and administrative support required to establish high-end urological services and to make such complex surgeries possible at GSVM.

Importance of PSA Testing in Prostate Cancer

On this occasion, Dr. Anil J. Baid emphasised the importance of Serum PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing in the early diagnosis of prostate cancer.

He highlighted that:
• Many elderly men present with urinary complaints such as poor flow, frequency, nocturia or obstruction.
• In a significant number of such patients, PSA is either not done or done very late.
• As a result, some patients undergo TURP (Transurethral Resection of Prostate) for presumed benign enlargement without a proper cancer evaluation, and underlying cancer may be missed or diagnosed only incidentally.

Dr. Baid appealed to both doctors and the general public that:
• Men above 50 years of age, and above 45 years in high-risk groups (family history, etc.), should get their PSA checked if they have urinary symptoms.
• Before planning any surgery for prostate enlargement, particularly TURP, a proper evaluation including PSA and digital rectal examination (DRE) should be done to rule out cancer.
• Early detection of prostate cancer greatly improves the chances of cure, and in selected patients, laparoscopic or minimally invasive radical prostatectomy can offer excellent oncological and functional outcomes.
